Important Notice: 2026/27 Minor Hockey Season Registration
Dear Parents and Guardians of All Age Divisions,
As we prepare for the upcoming 2026/27 minor hockey season, we would like to share important information regarding registration timelines, expectations, and planning considerations that apply across all age groups.
While we expect participation across all divisions, we are anticipating particularly strong registration numbers in the U11 and U13 age groups. Early registration will be critical to allow the Association to properly plan team structures, roster sizes, and evaluate tiering and team splits should it become necessary, in alignment with Hockey Alberta recommendations, all while supporting the best possible player experience.
Registration Timeline
To support effective planning and team formation, the Association will be implementing a firm registration window:
Registration for all divisions will open on May 1, 2026 and close on August 4, 2026. The Association will advertise multiple registration reminders leading up to the registration deadline to ensure families are aware of timelines and requirements.
Registrations received after August 4, 2026 will be considered late. Late registrants will be placed on a waiting list and may not receive a position to play. Acceptance will be subject to roster availability and final approval by the Board of Directors. A $100 late registration penalty will apply.
Underage / Play-Up Consideration
New for the 2026/27 season, an underage consent option will be included directly within the registration form. This allows families to indicate if they are willing to have their child considered to play up one age group. Indicating interest via the underage consent option does not guarantee placement and does not commit a player to playing up. Final decisions will be made following discussions with families and roster reviews; however, early communication is vital for effective planning.
Early identification of this information is essential to:
Why Firm Timelines Matter
The intent of these firm timelines is to ensure coaches, managers, and the executive have the critical information needed to make informed decisions early in the process. This information allows the Association to:
Ice Scheduling Considerations
Due to the large projected number of registrations and continued growth across our membership, families should be aware that ice schedules for the 2026/27 season may be subject to change and may look different than in previous years. While the Association will work to provide consistent and fair ice allocations, final schedules will be dependent on confirmed team counts, age-group needs, and available ice. We appreciate your understanding as we adapt to growth.
Final Reminder
We strongly encourage all families to register as early as possible and to carefully review all options within the registration system. Early registration helps ensure a well-organized and successful hockey season for all participants.
Sincerely,
Smoky Lake Minor Hockey Executive
